When I was younger, the only election that I knew about was the presidential election. I’ve since realized that local and Congressional elections can be just as important, if not more important when it comes to the impact on my life and those in my community.

In recent years, an average of only 9% of registered voters in Austin actually vote in local elections each year. That means 9% of your community has been dictating the policies that 100% of your community must follow.

Local elections allow for elected officials to represent targeted communities. They communicate our voices and are capable of implementing our suggestions and ideas. Local elections dictate policies on public safety, taxes, budgets, resource allocation, transportation networks, and more.

Communicating with candidates and voter participation are both crucial for community representation.

Recognizing the importance of elections, several communities in Austin, including the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Group (APAPA), the Civic Leadership Forum and Indian American Coalition of Texas (IACT), have organized the 2018 Civic Leadership & Candidates Forum.

Attending candidates include those running for the House of Representatives, City of Austin, and Travis county offices.
