Last week, on Thursday, May 31, 2018, Texas Capital News organized a field trip to Laguna Gloria, one of the museum sites of The Contemporary Austin. We at Texas Capital News’ wanted to celebrate our readership and create an opportunity for the community to socialize and bond.

Staff at Laguna Gloria introduced the museum’s phenomenal collection from contemporary artists around the world, mostly comprised of exterior sculptures scattered around the museum grounds. Our readers were curious to hear about the stories behind each art piece. One of the pieces at the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park is Anya Gallaccio’s To See If Time Was There, which is a large piece of carved limestone with granite, marble, sandstone, soapstone, and quartzite inlays representing the most efficient industrial cuts for wood production.

Because the tour took place after hours, we had the entire museum to ourselves, including a beautiful view of the Colorado River. A new sculpture installation, Watching by Elmgreen & Dragset, sat on the river bank. The bronze figure was intrigued by the view on the other side of the river, and we were intrigued by the sculpture’s glow reflecting the sunset. It was a beautiful afternoon, not too different from any other day in Austin. Art, friends, and the spirit of our community, however, made it lovely and pleasant.
